Thanks to Dale we have confirmation on the “lid” It is a tobacco pipe wind guard. I straightened it a bit, but the material is quite fragile so I stopped before it broke. Hinge on one side catch on the other. The edge is scalloped so as to vent as well as the interesting vents on top.
